The Youth team marched on in the FA cup in
front of a big crowd tonight.
Playing against Allied Premiership opposition Maidenhead inflicted
their biggest defeat of the season.
Although the scoreline suggests a rout that was far from the case.
For the neutral watching the Youth level for the first time you
would have found it hard not to be impressed. Some good quality
football was played by both teams in a very fair manner.
Starting once again with our 3 4 3 formation we aimed to take the
game to Kidlington who had beat Premiership leaders, Bisley Sports
4-1 the previous week. Having done a bit of homework we learnt
they like to, score from crosses and playing wide, something we
tried not to let them do.
Kidlington came closest to scoring in the 15th minute when a
freekick hit the post and luckily for keeper O'Brien rebounded the
right way to safety.
We had three clear cut chances in the first half with James
Gisborne and Nathan Lishman wasting the first two. The third was a
well worked free kick that was nodded on by Sam Lock producing a
great flying catch from the keeper.
The back three of 16yr old Deverall, Stevenson and 15 yr old Jake
Chance held firm and resistant.
At the other end the front three of Barney, Hazell and Gisborne
was not working so well with Barney and Gisborne playing too wide
too allow Hazell to be productive.
At half time we felt we had the beating of our visitors who were a
lot older and we doubted they had our fitness levels. We started
the half at a good tempo with the idea to wear them down as they
defended resolutely.
On the hour we were forced to make a change bringing on forward
George Lock for James Gisborne who missed most of pre-season and
isn't quite up to our required fitness level yet as he went down
with cramp.
Although we were playing well our chances were mainly some
cracking 30 yarders which were skimming the goal.
With 10 minutes remaining I decided to change the formation and go
3 5 2. We brought on Raj Gill on the left, Swapped Josh Waldron
over to the right and sent Nathan Lishman to head up the midfield
with Ryan Hazell moving to the forward most position.
This settled us a little as we took control of midfield with Lewis
Gratton playing superbly alongside Sam Lock.
Patience played off when a great ball from Lishman found Hazell
free of his marker who slotted nicely past the advancing keeper in
the 87nd minute.
Any last resolve seemed to fade as another great ball, this time
from Gill, set Hazell free who beat the last defender before
unselfishly pulling the ball back to beat the keeper passed to
Nathan Lishman who passed the ball into an empty net on 92 mins.
Substitute George Lock made it 3 from 4 sub appearances to wrap up
the game in the 96th minute with a well taken low driven goal.
We now face the winners of Bracknell Town & Aylesbury United to
progress through to the big boys of Div 1 & 2 and the first round
proper.
Championship sides and Premiership sides join in the 3rd round
proper.
Overall a very pleasing performance after last week's dip.
