Taylor: No room for complacency (21.009.06)

AFTER two attempts, the Magpies eventually saw off tenacious underdogs Carterton Town to progress into the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
While many fans may have expected the senior side to demolish their Oxfordshire opponents, manager Carl Taylor knew it would be a rough ride.
He said: “I didn’t underestimate Carterton as they had enjoyed two good wins to get to Saturday’s match and would be up for maintaining that run. I was nervous before match which is unusual for me.
“Most people had written Carterton off, but I knew it wasn’t going to be that easy.
“Fortunately we played well in both matches, but on Saturday especially didn’t take our chances.”
He added: “On Tuesday, we lost two players to injury in the first 20 minutes which didn’t help, but came back strongly.
“What’s important against a physical side is that you are not intimidated, and we weren’t.”
The Magpies prize for progressing is a £2,000 cheque and a trip to Isthmian Premier League side East Thurrock United for the second qualifying round on Saturday, September 30.
Although the Magpies picked up injuries from the match – the worst of which is a knee problem for Ryan Johnson – on the plus side youth team player Lewis Driver was given a run out on and, according to Taylor, was ‘fantastic’.

The revolving doors at York Road have been in full swing again with the departure of Mark Burgess, Paul Kelly and Christian Metcalfe, however Taylor expects to sign Lee Newman before Saturday’s clash with Clevedon Town at York Road.
The Magpies boss commented: “Lee is a class player and I hope to rekindle the form he showed when he was with us before.”
As for bottom of the table Clevedon, Taylor said: “We are unbeaten in eight games now and unbeaten at home all season.
“We won’t be complacent against them.”
