No more doom and gloom (21.06.06)

PLAYERS are looking forward to getting back to training at Maidenhead United following an influx of high quality personnel to the club.
Magpies boss Carl Taylor said there was a ‘real buzz’ about the club following the signings of Dominic Sterling, Dwain Clarke and Adrian Allen.
He added: “There has always been a bit of doom and gloom about the club in pre-season before, but now I think there is quite a positive outlook here.”
The manager revealed there could be a few more signings before the season begins as he attempts to build a side to challenge for promotion.
“There’s nothing to report on new signings at the moment, but I’m sure there will be a couple more,” he said.
“It’s all been about finding the right signings for where we need to be and how I want to play the game.”
Taylor will get his first real look at his developing squad on Saturday, when pre-season training starts from 11am at Cox Green School in Highfield Lane.
The manager stressed that anyone who wants to try out for the Southern League club is welcome simply to turn up.
“I won’t be turning people away,” he said.
“Some people are a bit afraid to just turn up, but all are welcome and sometimes you can find some gems at these sessions.”
The boss said he would be looking very closely at the defence for this campaign after some heavy defeats last season, but his emphasis would always be on attacking football.
“I expect to outscore most teams most weeks – we’ll just be a little bit tighter at the back,” he said.
“There are three or four teams who are going to be very strong, but this season is one of promise.”

• Maidenhead United are looking for sponsors to back the club this season.
Magpies finance director Peter Griffin said he wanted to hear from anyone who wanted to join the likes of youth team sponsor Domenico’s.
He said: “No reasonable offer will be refused.”
