Magpies’ goal-glut (10.08.06)

TWELVE goals in four outings, while conceding just one, have certainly pleased Maidenhead United manager Carl Taylor.
However, despite the sudden goal rush, the York Road boss is still focusing on strengthening his side’s defences.
After Tuesday night’s 4-0 thrashing of Hanwell Town, he said: “We’ve created a lot of chances in these games and I would like us to have put away six or seven.
“But I have to sort the defence out first.
“It is starting to look solid. Chico (Ramos) has hardly had to make a save.
“And they’ve only been together three weeks, so that’s not bad.
“Okay, we haven’t been tested by higher league opponents, and we should be stronger than the teams we’ve been playing. But at least we’ve shown that we are.
“The way we’ re playing shows the team is functioning well.”
The search for a few missing pieces to complete the jigsaw goes on, with Taylor hoping to sign another central midfielder and perhaps another striker before the league campaign kicks-off.
The midfield in particular seems to be a cause for concern, with Taylor saying: “I have numbers in every other department.
“What I’ve got in midfield is adequate, but if I can strengthen it I will.
“The young players who have worked their way into the team have got my support, so if anyone comes along they need to be extra special.”
Rumours are circulating that former United striker Craig O’Connor could become available to fill the vacant striker’s role, and Taylor admitted he would be very pleased to have him back.
He said: “There are rumours he’d like to work closer to home and we’re one of his options. He would be a very good player to have if he becomes available.
