Sterling adds worth to Mags (02.06.06)

MAIDENHEAD United have put together the foundations of a promotion-chasing squad with the signing of experienced defender Dominic Sterling.
The England National Game XI player has signed from Canvey Island on a one year contract to pair up in the middle of defence with former team-mate Nathan Bunce.
The 30-year-old began his career on Wimbledon’s books but came to prominence with some impressive performances for Wealdstone which earned him a move to the Conference with Hayes in 2000.
He subsequently switched to Aldershot before moving to Canvey.
Magpies boss Carl Taylor was delighted with the signing, and hopes it will kick-start a promising season at York Road.
He said: “Dominic had a lot of offers from clubs, including Chelmsford, but he chose us.
“He’s based in west London which helped but he also knows me and Nathan (Bunce).
“Its a fantastic signing for us. He’s experienced, competitive, a born winner, has pace, is left-sided and can play in three or four positions.
“He’s the best defender Maidenhead will have ever had.”
He added: “He’s the perfect foil for Nathan and wants to be here for at least two years.
“He wants promotion and so do we.”
Taylor admitted that the signing, and the momentum gained, have changed the views of many at the club about the new season in the Southern League.
Taylor said: “We were talking about consolidation after relegation last season.
“However, with the signing of Dominic and the possibility of others, we’re now thinking about promotion.
“I’m up for it and I believe we’ll be ready for it.
“It’s good to have high expectations.”
Taylor has a hit-list of seven players, of which he says he’s close to signing two or three shortly.

Supporters are reminded that the Magpies share issue closes on June 30.
