Furious boss rings changes (31.03.06)

A SHAMBOLIC rout at St Albans City intensified pressure on York Road supremo Carl Taylor this week, as irate supporters and caustic critics logged on to the fans forum to vent their spleens.
Taylor slammed outsiders who were using the forum to stir up trouble, but did admit things needed to change after Saturday’s debacle.
He said: “I was not a happy man. I really believed we could go there and get something.
“I had warned the players about what St Albans could do, but I don’t even think they played that well.”
Nonetheless, Taylor believed he had learned a lot from the game, saying: “This was the last game I could find out about players, because everyone expected us to get hammered.
“We started quite brightly and looked fine.
“Then we started to self-destruct.
“We gave away two or three needless corners and they scored a weak goal.
“After that two or three players froze and got worse as the game went on. In the second half we were better.
“We had chances to get back but ultimately we failed to do that.
“I could handle losing to St Albans if the players did what they were asked, but if I’d had eight substitutes available I would have used all of them.”
As a result, Taylor has decided to ring the changes.
He explained: “We’ve got seven games left and I want to win three, so I’ve had to make some decisions this week, because there’s a transfer deadline this Friday.
“I will have at least one new player on the pitch this Saturday, but it may be as many as four.”
Former Magpie Paul Kelly is among the four, and he could be joined by Jamie Southern from Cambridge City and another former Magpie Ryan Johnson.
Brendan Gallen is also available until the end of the season, something Taylor described as ‘good timing’.
He added: “The boys want to do it and they really try, but they just can’t do it.
“At the end of the season I have to know that I have done everything I can to keep this team in this league. We’re past the stage of being confident or not. That doesn’t matter now.
“I just need a team on the pitch that will fight for those points.
“I have some players who just want to play football rather than play for Maidenhead.
“Some protect themselves by not giving what they are capable of, thinking if we go down they can leave.
“I’m not one who will let people get away with that.
“The players I’m bringing in are tough, and whoever is left out is left out.”
Meanwhile, Cambridge City have made an approach for Stephen Hughes, and Taylor admitted his top-scorer could be gone by today (Friday).
However, he did not seem overly concerned, saying: “He hasn’t scored since the Stortford game.
“In fact he hasn’t played particularly well since other clubs started coming in for him.
“I still have (Marc) Whiteman and Yashwa (Romeo) , Nana (Badu) is available again and Neville Roach will score goals.”
And it’s goals United need this week, as they entertain midtable battlers Weston-super-Mare and Bognor Regis Town at York Road on Saturday afternoon and Tuesday night respectively.
Looking ahead to the games, Taylor added: “I think Weston looked down and out a few weeks ago but since then they’ve got their act together and they will be very hard to beat.
“But we have to beat them.
“Bognor Regis have got themselves out of it now and should have relaxed.
“But I’m still smarting from October so I’m coming at them.”
