Magpies focus on ‘consolation cup’ (31.10.02)

MAIDENHEAD United launch their FA Trophy bid tomorrow (Saturday), with the painful memory of an early cup exit still fresh in their minds.
Chairman Roger Coombs was furious after the Magpies’ last-ditch defeat to Welling United back in September, but admitted a run in the Trophy would be some consolation.
However, standing in United’s way are the Tonbridge Angels, who are currently lying in eighth place in the Dr Martens Eastern Division.
Magpies’ manager Alan Devonshire knows it will not be an easy ride.
He said: “It’s going to be tough. They are doing quite well at the moment.
“I know a few of their players and it’s going to be a hard game.”
United’s cause will be hampered by the continuing absence of striker Adrian Allen, who misses the game through suspension, having recovered from his recent injury only to be sent off while playing for the Reserves. Also, the return of No.1 goalkeeper Richard Barnard is still weeks, if not months, away, leaving Nick Hart with a huge burden of expectation heaped on his shoulders.
The temporary loss of Barnard, the victim of an unprovoked attack which left him with a fractured skull, has come as a big blow to the club, particularly as it came so early in a very promising season.
Devonshire said: “It’s a massive blow for the club, and for the boy himself.
“It’s something we didn’t need at this time of the season, but we’ll just have to handle it as best we can.
“But Nick’s got his chance now and it’s up to him to make the most of it.”
Meanwhile, the Angels have been busy building their squad.
They have signed midfielder Paul Emblen from Wycombe Wanderers and prolific goal scorer Wade Falana, from Ryman Division 1 South leaders Carshalton Athletic in the last few weeks.
