York Road goal-fest (23.01.03)

THERE can be few complaints from Maidenhead United fans about Saturday’s entertaining 3-3 draw against Enfield, with the first-half goals alone worth the entrance money.
In fact, Andy Morley’s screaming volley for United’s second was virtually priceless.
And, while some will see the result as two points lost, it was comforting to see many of Devonshire’s men back to their very best.
Man of the match Morley, Ryan Ashe and Matt Glynn in particular showed endless energy and optimism, while hard-working performances from Andy Cook – who is now demonstrating he has two good feet as well as a good head – Andy Rose and Lawrence Yaku should have seen the result go United’s way.
However, while the Magpies look more and more comfortable going forward, they are still a little shaky at the back.
Manager Alan Devonshire said: “Enfield’s second goal was a cracker. You just have to hold your hands up and say ‘What a good strike’.
“But I thought sloppy defending was responsible for the other two.
“We’re leaking goals, but when you try and attack all the time your going to get that.
“Apart from that, I thought we played some really good stuff.
“I don’t know what was wrong with the goal we had disallowed, and if we had gone 3-1 up I think that would have been game over.
“But at the end of the day it was a very entertaining 3-3 draw and I haven’t got any complaints.”

United travel to Bedford Town tomorrow (Saturday), who have lost only once in their last 11 games and are unbeaten in the league since November. Recent results include a home win over Purfleet and a draw with Sutton United.
However, United’s recent record includes wins over Purfleet and St Albans, while their away record is among the best in the league.
Last time the two teams met, in mid-September, United were second best, but managed to score two goals in the dying minutes of play to claim all the points.
Consequently, Bedford could be seeking revenge, adding an extra edge to tomorrow’s encounter and making it extremely difficult to predict the outcome.
Devonshire said: “We were quite fortunate to beat them at our place. They’re the form team at the moment, so it should be difficult.
“But we don’t fear anyone and I’m sure the boys will be looking forward to it.”
