Dreyer promises goals, goals, goals

Magpies focus on atttack

WITH an almost completely new squad comes a refreshingly positive vision for football at Maidenhead United ahead of the opening Ryman League match tomorrow (Saturday).
Recently appointed manager John Dreyer has cast aside the more cautious approach of his predecessor Alan Devonshire and replaced it with a more ‘we'll score more goals than you will’ approach.
And the former Bradford City professional is confident his new set of players will perform.
He said: “This team has got a lot of goals and excitement in it. If you look at our matches together so far, we have always looked like scoring especially with the 4-4-2 system.
“The down side side is that we have looked like conceding also, but I’m aware of that.”
Dreyer is actively looking to strengthen the defence, although initially he believes he has the players to do the job – including himself.
He commented: “I’m working on my fitness and I expect to play a part in this team.
“As will Phil Gray [assistant manager] who could well be on the bench for tomorrow’s match. We’ll have to wait and see.”
And with a batch of new players – many of them with Football League experience – Dreyer is confident about the challenges ahead.
He said: “You must remember we have had to bring in an almost entirely new squad which takes time to gel.
“However things are going well and the feedback from the players has been excellent.”
“I’ve told the players the brief for every game is to makes things happen.
“We will go into every match aiming to be positive and to win.”
The only setback to the positive feeling is an injury to star midfielder Martyn Lee, whose chances of playing at Heybridge Swifts tomorrow is regarded as 50/50.
However Dreyer had been doing his homework on his first opponents and knows who to look out for.
He said: “Heybridge have signed former Ipswich player Mickey Stockwell. He’s the type of lad who makes things happen so we’ll have to be wary of him.
“But to be honest although I will try to learn as much about opponents as possible, I’ll be concentrating on our own game and ensuring that’s up to scratch.”
On Tuesday, at York Road at 7.45pm, the Magpies will run out in front of their home fans to face an always-tough Kingstonian FC.
Dreyer was aware of the expectations: “The nerves will start jangling I’m sure, but I’m confident of success.”
