Our
goal is to impress our visitors
MAIDENHEADS
new look Heritage Centre reopened its doors on Tuesday with an exhibition
charting the history of the Magpies football team.
The Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, John Tryon was joined by several
members of Maidenhead United and Heritage Trust Chairman Richard
Poad for a champagne reception and tour of the renovated premises
with its first display on a sporting theme.
Richard Poad said: The Magpies Story is the first of several
exhibitions which we hope will attract a wider audience to the Heritage
Centre.
The layout looks terrific, it is much more open and brighter
and everyone who came was very impressed.
The Magpies Story charts the history of Maidenhead United Football
Club, which was founded in 1870, and features home and away strips,
trophies, programmes and photographs which were put together by
Club historian Mark Smith and Heritage Centre graphic designer Brian
Sanderson.
While the Mayor challenge Maidenhead United captain Tim Cook to
a game of table top football, the Mayoress found a reference to
her uncle, Jack Palethorpe, among the memorabilia who scored a record
69 goals in 35 games during the 1929/30 season.
Richard Poad said: Weve already received a lot of interest
about the exhibition and a football table was kindly which makes
it interactive.
We hope that our bright new Heritage Centre will impress our
visitors, our landlords and the Royal Borough, whose support is
necessary if we are to provide the permanent Heritage Centre which
Maidenhead deserves.
The Magpies Story will run until Saturday October 28 at the Heritage
Centre in the Broadway Mall of the Nicholsons Centre. It is open
six days a week from 10am to 4pm and admission is free.
