Magpies
sink sorry Harrow (Story posted 18/8/01)
MAIDENHEAD
United got their season off to an impressive start today (Saturday),
with a comfortable 3-0 away win over Harrow Borough.
A small but vocal band of supporters had made the trip to
Earlsmead and they did not have to wait long to start celebrating.
After just four minute, United win a free kick 10 yards outside
the box.
Matt Glynn whipped the ball into the penalty area and an unmarked
Steve Croxford buried it in the back of the net.
One to the good, the Magpies started to dominate the game.
Paul Kelly and Chris Ferdinand took over the midfield, while
Paul Scott, Matt Glynn and Obinna Ulasi began jinking and
passing their way through a static Harrow defence.
At the back, Croxford, Craker and Cook were keeping the Harrow
strikers at bay and keeper Barnard had very little to do.
Harrow did enjoy longish spells of good possession, but failed
to penetrate the last quarter of the pitch.
Then, deep into injury time, Glynn put Scott through, who
held off two defenders before unleashing a shot into the bottom
corner.
2-0 down at the turn, the Harrow players had their heads on
the chests as they headed for the changing rooms.
In the second half, United played a more controlled game,
hitting Harrow on the counter.
The Harrow players began to lookand sound a bit rattled and,
sure enough, their skipper Christian Hyslop was soon on his
way to an early bath, after trying to kick Scott into the
dug-outs.
Substitutions followed and Harrow finally started to make
headway.
However, Maidenhead were always in control and after 29 minutes
Scott was dragged down in the box by Darren Bloor, winning
a penalty.
Lee Channell converted, making it 3-0, and the match was effectively
over.
Croxford later cleared a point blank shot off the line but,
despite Harrow throwing everything into attack, the Magpies
kept a clean sheet to finish the game three nil to the good.
Final score 3-0, scorers Croxford (4), Scott (51), Channell
(74 pen).)
