Perfect start for Taylor (23.09.05)

New boss secures win on his debut

FRESHLY appointed manager Carl Taylor enjoyed a dream start to his new career on Saturday, as the formerly winless Magpies grabbed all three points to move out of the relegation places.
Some may point out that their opponents, Carshalton Athletic, were also struggling near the foot of the table.
But Taylor asked for all the facts to be taken into consideration.
He said: “Carshalton had brought in two or three new players, so that was their strongest side of the season. And they were unbeaten at home.
“We were the worst team in the league, so they (Carshalton) would have been targeting this game.”
Outlining his tactics for the game, he said: “At training I took the pressure off the players. I told them I wasn’t bothered if we lost this game. I just wanted them to show their ability.”
Eleven talented individuals do not always make a good team, but Taylor had the confidence to mix and match, and got the required result.
He said: “Good footballers can read a game, and I have a lot of good footballers. They did really, really well and they kept a clean sheet.
“We were a bit lucky at times, but you make your own luck, and over the game we had most of the chances.”
After the match, Taylor seemed too busy to truly celebrate, as he rushed around talking to players and officials, and thanking the supporters.
He explained: “I didn’t have time to be happy for myself. I was just pleased for the fans and the committee.”
However, he is hoping to get a chance of his own tomorrow (Saturday), when United travel to Yeading in the FA Cup.
He said: “It could have been a better cup tie. Someone from a league below us, or a home game.
“And Yeading know what it’s like to have an FA Cup run. Last year they had the best run for a club from our level for quite some time.
“They know what it’s like and they’ll want it again. So it’s going to be very hard.
“We’ll try our best and I’m sure it will be a great game to watch, whatever happens.
“But if we can win that one, then I’ll be happy. Very happy.”
Unfortunately, three of his players are unavailable for the clash, as they are cup tied.
But Taylor was hoping to complete three new signings before the weekend to bolster his stretched squad.
Looking beyond tomorrow’s game, Taylor promised continuous improvements throughout the year.
He said: “At the moment we’re just enjoying each other’s company and getting used to each other.
“It’s very enthusiastic, it’s bubbling and they’re looking forward to the challenge.
“But look at us in a couple of months’ time and you’ll see a completely different team.
“We’ll be one of the best footballing sides in the league, and we’ll have other teams worrying about what we’re going to do.”
However, he was not underestimating the scale of the task, and admitted it would be a long and difficult road to salvation.
He said: “If we’re good enough we’ll stay up. And I’m sure we will be.
“If not, it won’t be through lack of trying.”
