A goal from Ashley Smith
seven minutes from time gave United a narrow victory over local rivals
Windsor & Eton.
With the league season
just seven days away Maidenhead manager Johnson Hippolyte
started with perhaps his strongest fully fit eleven to give supporters a
firm indication of the shape of things to come.
However the two division superiority
of the Magpies was not apparent in a game which was keenly contested by
both teams. Faced with the task of beating
former goalkeeper Chico Ramos, United produced just one noteworthy effort
in the first half when a Jermaine Hinds shot was pushed wide by Ramos at
full stretch. This lack of goalmouth
action was in spite of some great work on the left wing by Dale Binns who could only watch as several good crosses were
not exploited in the penalty area.
Similarly at the other the
Windsor strikeforce of Seedell and Chennells turned down more than one golden opportunity
to test Shane Gore in the United goal.
Maidenhead’s blushes
were saved in the dying minutes when Ashley Smith finished from close
range.
