A goal and two assists
from trialist Jones Awuah
completed his impressive bid for a place in the United squad, and sealed a
comfortable victory over Bracknell
Town at Larges Lane
four days ahead of the big kick off.
The game was a final
opportunity for the fringe members of the Magpie squad to impress manager
Johnson Hippolyte prior to the start of the
season proper. It was also an
opportunity for a first run out for close season signing Ben Surey following injury whilst club stalwart Ashley
Smith continued his recuperation with his second start.
Unsurprisingly Surey looked eager to get involved and he opened the
scoring in the eleventh minute when he rose highest at the far post to head
home James Hamsher’s corner from the right.
Twelve minutes later a
Mark Nisbet effort was blocked on the line by the
goalkeeper, but the Robins could not hold back the tide for much
longer. The lead was doubled in the
27th minute by Ashley Smith when he converted an Awuah cross from the right. Seven minutes before the break Awuah switched flanks and forced an error from the
keeper before unselfishly squaring the ball to Gavin James who fired the
ball into the unguarded net.
With forty four minutes on
the clock ex Magpie Rory Jenkins gave new goalkeeper Warren Carter to
demonstrate his ability, Carter saving well from a rocket of a long shot
from Jenkins.
On the stroke of half time
Awuah completed a great first half by latching
onto a long ball forward, running clear of the defence and beating the
keeper to deservedly get his name on the scoresheet.
With a number of
substitutions in the second half the scoreline
remained the same giving the Magpies the perfect end to their pre season
campaign.
Magpies: Carter, Bradshaw, Nathan, Nisbet, Baddeley, Surey, Smith A, Okyere, Awuah, James, Hamsher.
