Dons Give Magpies Third Degree (13.09.08)

WIMBLEDON 3 (1)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (0)

Maidenhead’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end yesterday in front of a bumper crowd at the Fans Stadium.

With both sides yet to be the defeated in the Blue Square South, the game was eagerly anticipated by all concerned, but for the first forty five minutes at least it lived up to the stereotype of a tense top of the table tussle.

This was due in part to the cautious approach adopted by wily Wimbledon boss Terry Brown, his defence sitting deep, happy to soak up the waves of Maidenhead attacks which came their way.  Thus goal scoring chances were virtually non existent in the first half, although the fact that the Dons were handed a lead from the penalty spot in the 25th minute was hardly conducive to a more open game.  The Maidenhead culprit was Grant Cooper, handling to allow Jon Main to open the scoring.

At the interval Brown introduced new signing Danny Kedwell on the leftwing and he set about exposing Maidenhead’s frail right flank drawing a good save from Shane Gore in the 52nd minute.  Gore proved to be the Maidenhead star of the show in the second half, regularly impressing with fine saves from Main and Kedwell.  Wimbledon confirmed their authority in the 68th minute when Tom Davis applied a good finish from the edge of the area following a move down the right wing.  The win was sealed four minutes later when Cooper was again penalised for a foul in the penalty box, Main delivering an encore from the spot.  With three minutes remaining Maidenhead salvaged some pride with the move of the game which started with Gore, the ball moving quickly down the left, Lee Newman delivering a pass which put Richard Pacquette clear, the striker finishing with aplomb.
