Three
Eastleigh goals in eight minutes early in the
second half condemned Maidenhead to their heaviest defeat of the season.
In
a virtual replay of the corresponding match last season, the half time
deadlock was indefatigably broken by a rampaging Eastleigh
who swept Maidenhead aside.
United
had a warning this would happen in the first half. Eastleigh
started much the stronger, taking the lead in the thirteenth minute. Ben Surey gave
the ball away on Eastleigh’s right
flank, the Spitfires taking advantage by moving the ball quickly cross
field to Peter Adeniyi who went onto prove the
law of the ex by beating Shane Gore with a fine shot to put his former team
behind.
Stung
by the deficit Maidenhead worked hard to get back into the game and almost
equalised when Ashley Nicholls and Rocky Baptiste
combined well to put Richard Pacquette through, Pacquette’s first time shot drawing a good save
from Jason Matthews who pushed the ball wide of the post.
As
the break drew nearer Maidenhead turned the screw, equalising in the 37th
minute. A good move down the right
was only half cleared by Eastleigh, the
ball finding its way to Ashley Smith just inside the left hand sector of
the penalty area. The diminutive
winger then unleashed a ferocious shot which flew into the back of the net
to score.
The
first half whistle went with Maidenhead on top, the supporters going off for
half time refreshment confident that the comeback would soon be completed.
However
within minutes of the restart Maidenhead were blown away by an Eastleigh whirlwind. The Spitfires regained the lead in the
fiftieth minute when a thrown in from the right wing found its way to an
unmarked Tony Taggart at the far post who gratefully swept the ball into
the net. Within seconds the lead was
doubled. Maidenhead lost the ball
from the restart and Eastleigh immediately
launched an attack, Andy Forbes going clear in the inside left channel to
score. Forbes then sealed the points
ahead of the hour mark when he converted a corner at the far post.
