Wimbledon take the Main road to victory (17.01.09)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 0

WIMBLEDON 4 (2)

Two second half goals from Blue Square South leading scorer Jon Main sealed a four goal win for Wimbledon which was far from as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

This was exemplified by open exchanges which saw Maidenhead take the game to the visitors but fail to take advantage of their domination before being hit by a Wimbledon counter punch.  On twelve minutes Richard Pacquette found himself with time and opportunity to score but pulled his shot just wide.  Five minutes later a swift Dons counter attack was stopped illegally by Mark Nisbet allowing Sam Hatton to prove the law of the ex by hitting a thunderbolt of a free kick from fully 30 yards to score.

Maidenhead worked hard to get back into the game with Pacquette and Surey going close but as the half time drew near it was Wimbledon again who made their forward play count.  Shane Gore saved well from Anthony Finn just past the half hour mark but was helpless to stop a Danny Kedwell close range effort six minutes later, the striker turning in a Main cross with ease.

Any hopes of a Magpie revival after the break were dashed with seconds of the restart when a Kedwell cross was headed goalward by Elliot Godfrey.  Gore kept the ball out at full stretch but his palmed save fell to Main who converted from a few yards out.

Despite the deficit United threw everything at their opponents but were foiled by some great team defending which saw virtually every yellow shirt throwing themselves in front of each wave of United attack with goalkeeper James Pullen on hand to stop anything that got through the Womble lines.  In particular Pullen saved well from Rocky Baptiste, Ben Surey and Lee Newman.  Then to rub salt in the Magpies wounds a long clearance twelve minutes from time was collected by Main who ran clear of the Maidenhead defence before beating Gore to score his second.  Indeed it was only the combination of a great tackle from Jermaine Hinds and block from Gore that stopped Main completing his hat trick with eight minutes to go.
