Maidenhead’s York Road November woe continued last
night as latest visitors Newport
grimly held onto a sixth minute lead to secure their first away win of the
season.
Aside from Steve Smith replacing the injured
Shane Gore in goal, Johnson Hippolyte also opted to bring in Bobby Behzadi
and Manny Williams for Tyron Smith and Rocky Baptiste respectively. Despite the goal the changes looked to be
working in a first half when the Magpies did everything but score.
However this was in the face of an early deficit
which came when a cross from the left wing was inadequately cleared
allowing Craig Reid to lash the loose ball into the net. In a game that was not for faint hearts
both sides threw themselves into the task of
taking something from the game. As
United attacked Newport
were not stinting in their efforts to get players behind the ball whilst
also looking dangerous on the counter attack.
Manny Williams had the best chance to level the
score, picking up a loose ball in the 22nd minute to go clear
only to be denied by the swift reaction of Exiles keeper Glyn Thompson who
sprinted out of his goal to narrow the angle and smother the shot.
Thompson was finally beaten in the 38th
minute when Ashley Nicholls unleashed a rocket of a shot from fully thirty
yards which rattled the crossbar.
Three minutes later a Dale Binns cross from the left rolled
agonisingly across the face of the goal before being touched behind for a
corner.
Having worked up a good head of steam running up
to the break, an equaliser seemed inevitable in the second period, but
despite most of it being spent in Newport’s
half, United were unable to craft a bona fide chance. Indeed as subs Rocky Baptiste, Lee Newman
and Jermaine Hinds were brought onto inject new life in the search for a
goal it was Newport
who cam closest to scoring when they hit the upright with fifteen minutes
left.
