Magpies Continue Bishops’ Penance (24.01.09)

BISHOPS STORTFORD 2 (1)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 0

A goal from a set piece either side of half time condemned Maidenhead to another defeat in what must be their least favourite part of Hertfordshire.

The Magpies have won just once at Bishops Stortford and scarcely deserved to double this tally with a lacklustre performance against a determined home side on a chilly January afternoon.

Stortford dominated the first half from the outset.  Their defence dealt comfortably with any attacking threat from United, with the Maidenhead goal coming under sustained pressure, mainly due to set pieces executed brilliantly by young right winger Danny Green.

Green’s talents were showcased in a passage of play midway through the first half when a Delapesque long throw led to four successive corners, all events being initiated by Green.

It was no surprise then that he was the source of the opening goal three minutes short of the interval.  His long throw was met by a glancing header from Harlee Deen on the edge of the penalty area which flew into the net.  The celebrations looked to be shortlived when everyone realised the linesman had his flag raised but referee Saliy waved it away and confirmed the goal.  The Magpies could hardly complain about going into the interval a goal behind but would have been frustrated to concede so close to the interval, particularly as for all the Stortford pressure Shane Gore did not have to make a save.

The lead was doubled four minutes after half time.  This time it was a corner from Green, taken from the left wing which was headed home at the near post by Lewis Smith (pictured above).  Although United did show more purpose going forward in the second half, they were very lucky not to go further behind on the hour mark.  Duane Jackman skipped clear of the defence and beat Gore only to see his shot hit the post and rebound back into the arms of a grateful goalkeeper.

Maidenhead continued to push for a goal but had little to show for their efforts until Nicky Eyre tipped a Dale Binns shot round the post in stoppage time.
