Maidenhead firmly stated their
promotion credentials with a five goal thrashing of Worcester City
at York Road. Turning in a performance which was
appropriately hot for a crowd numbering 451, United dominated the game from
start to finish.
The Magpies opened the scoring after just
seventy seconds when a Jamal Fyfield cross from the left was met by the
head of Ashley Nicholls by the penalty spot, the ball looping over the
hapless keeper Danny McDonnell into the back of the net.
United doubled their lead in the tenth when a
Tyron Smith free kick from the left was spilled by McDonnell, leaving
Richard Pacquette and Rocky Baptiste to fight over the spoils. Baptiste, a late entry onto the teamsheet
after Lee Newman was delayed in traffic en route to the game, got there
first to tap the ball over the line from point blank range and score his
first goal for the club.
Worcester, to their credit, tried to play their
way back into the game, building patiently from the back but their hard
work was in vain as Maidenhead scored a third eight minutes before half
time. The goal came from another
free kick, this time from the right.
Dale Binns stepped up to take it, and with all eyes on the men at
the far post waiting for the expected cross, Binns surprised everyone with
a shot that flew into the top left corner of the goal. McDonnell recovered a little pride with a
good save from Richard Pacquette in the 42nd minute. Maidenhead completed the good work for
the half when they weathered a storm of successive corners in stoppage
time.
After the break with their Manager’s angry
words ringing in their ears, Worcester
made a concerted effort to get back into the game but it was game over just
short of the hour mark when good work in the midfield Baptiste allowed him
to put his striking partner Pacquette through to score with a good finish.
Maidenhead saved the best until last, the fifth
and final goal being the pick of the afternoon. With nineteen minutes remaining Tyron and
Ashley Smith combined well on the right to move the ball inside to
Pacquette. Seeing none of his
teammates available, the free scoring striker took the only option and went
for goal hitting the target with aplomb.
Pacquette almost completed the perfect half with a header that beat
McDonnell but hit the post to deny him his hat trick.
