Maidenhead
FA Cup dreams came to a premature end with a performance which stank as
highly as the agricultural smell which enveloped Bashley’s
New Forest home.
Injuries,
a suspension and a hitch to Rocky Baptiste's
transfer limited Johnson Hippolyte's selection,
but it was evident from the opening exchanges that United had enough
quality to beat their hosts.
However
Maidenhead's defence was unable to handle a Bashley
team living up to the Southern League stereotypically physical and direct
style of play.
This
method bore fruit for the Bash in the sixth minute when a long ball forward
was flicked on into the path of Jeremy Tarr. His shot was blocked by the feet of Shane
Gore, the ball falling to an unmarked Richard Gillespie who swept the ball
into the net.
Maidenhead's
patient build up play led to long periods of domination but they were
unable to force a save from Bashley keeper David
Elm until the sixty fifth minute when his feet stopped a Lee Newman shot
following good work from Ashley Smith.
Bashley remained
dangerous on the break and should have doubled their lead when Gillespie
went clear only for Gore to save well with eighteen minutes remaining.
The
second decisive goal duly arrived seven minutes later, this time Gillespie
turned provider, cutting in from the left wing to hit a pass across the
face of the goal which was tapped in at the far post by Nic Eastham.
United
struck back right away when Lee Newman halved the deficit with eight
minutes left but despite an overdue sense of urgency amongst the Maidenhead
ranks a replay was not required Richard Pacquette
going closest to an equaliser with a shot that went wide.
