A
Richard Pacquette goal just before half time earned
Maidenhead a well deserved point in a competitive game contested by two
well matched teams.
Played
in the teeth of a bitterly cold easterly wind, the game was definitely one
for the purist with little on view to warm the hardy souls who had turned out
to watch.
Welling
lived up to the role of the home team taking the game to the visitors with
the Magpies looking to break quickly.
This produced little in the way of chances in the opening twenty
minutes. Then Sonny Cobbs was given room to take the ball into the penalty
area and shoot drawing a good one handed save from a fully stretched Shane
Gore.
Welling
took the lead in the 34th minute from a corner on the left taken by Lee
Blackburn. The ball sailed over to
the far post where Jack Parkinson headed the ball goalward. Bobby Behzadi
tried to clear but the ball fell to Charlie Sheringham
who gleefully kicked the ball over the line in a poacher style which his
watching father Teddy would have been proud of.
Maidenhead wasted no time getting back on terms and were
level by the interval. The goal came
when a fierce Ben Surey shot was bravely blocked
by Cobbs.
Ashley Smith picked up the loose ball and found an unmarked Pacquette at the far post with a neat pass which was
coolly converted by the prolific striker.
The
second half saw both sides enjoy periods of domination without being able
to add to the score. Welling became
increasingly frustrated by denied claims for penalties which eventually saw
manager Andy Ford dismissed from the bench.
Maidenhead came closest to winning the game late on when a stinging
Tyron Smith shot was not gathered cleanly by David Wilkinson, however he
managed to collect the ball at the second attempt with the Magpies ready to
pounce.
