MAIDENHEAD
United bounced back from four consecutive defeats to take the
points in a convincing all-round performance at Dulwich on Tuesday
evening.
Alan Devonshire made one change from Saturday's starting line-up,
with Billy Cove taking the place of Lee Channell and his partnership
with Adrian Allen caused constant problems for the Hamlets'
defence.
As early as the fifth minute, a long clearance from Richard
Barnard was played through to Allen who made space in the box
but shot straight at the goalkeeper.
The next 20 minutes belonged to Maidenhead as they pressed forward
searching for the lead. A cross from Barry Rake was headed narrowly
wide by Allen and then Cove escaped his marker but his shot
hit the base of the post.
An attempted clearance by Cleeveley in the Dulwich goal was
charged down by Allen and the ball came out to Cove whose lob
went just over the bar. On 27 minutes, after further good work
down the left from Allen, who pulled the ball back to the edge
of the penalty area, Rake fired a volley just past the post.
Eventually, in the 34th minute, the goal that had been threatening
arrived when the Cove-Allen duo combined to break the deadlock.
Cove pushed the ball through to Allen, who ran on and slotted
the ball past the advancing keeper.
A minute later, a cross from Obi Ulasi was headed straight at
the keeper by that man Allen again.
Then, just as United were looking towards a half-time lead,
Dulwich equalised against the run of play. Mark Fowler was brought
down in the box by a clumsy challenge from Chris Ferdinand and
the same player stepped up to place a well-taken penalty.
At the beginning of the second half, Steve Croxford limped off
to be replaced by Steve Brown but this enforced change did not
affect the Magpies' confidence and on 51 minutes the lead was
deservedly restored. A cross from the left was superbly met
by Chris Ferdinand at the far post and his header rocketed into
the net.
Then a good run by Peter Garland, the Hamlet's captain, culminated
in a good ball across goal but Tom Hickey's timely tackle ended
the danger. The ball switched to the opposite end and on the
hour a through ball from Tim Cook was volleyed wide by Cove.
The same player volleyed over again a minute later.
It was Garland again, 15 minutes from time, who progressed down
the left and passed to Bobby George, whose darting shot went
just wide.
This was followed by the clinching goal for United after 77
minutes, when a great through-ball by Allen split the Dulwich
defence and Cove ran through to place the ball inside the left
post for a goal merited by his efforts on the night.
At the other end, another Peter Garland free-kick was saved
by Richard Barnard down by the left-hand post.
As the Magpies played out time, Garland finally secured the
goal he had earned for Dulwich when Cook missed a header which
bounced over him and Garland was able to lob Richard Barnard.
There were only two minutes left and United ensured there were
no more scares by keeping possession and holding on for a welcome
and well-deserved three points. |
