Two
goals either side of half-time settled this contest between
two teams still looking over their shoulders at the prospect
of relegation from the Ryman Premier Division.
A relatively open and flowing game, given the circumstances,
the match expoded into life with two goals in the first eight
minutes,
Then United made the most of their opportunities to take a two
goal advantage.
Although Grays played some nice football, and it is easy to
see how they have improved over the last three months, they
did not reduce the deficit until the final minute.
While there was little to choose between the teams, there was
quite a contrast in styles.
United prefer the more direct approach and are happy to play
the ball into the corners for the front men to chase. Grays
play a more controlled game with more touches of the ball per
man.
Yet no one system was better than the other as both teams chalked
up enough reasonable opportunities to lay claim to at least
a share of the spoils. But for once it was United who stole
the day.
But they had to come from behind when, on six minutes Sam Cooper
finished a fine solo effort to stun the York Road faithful.
However four minutes later, on- loan Nathan Tyson got on the
end of a super Paul Woodhouse cross to drill the ball home.
Chances came and went on both sides but on the stroke of half-time
Barry Rake poked the ball in following a Steve Croxford flick-on,
and then on 47 minutes Tim Cook launched a powerful header past
the despairing Grays keeper.
Although Alex Feddis struck at the death for the visitors, United
held on after a committed effort. |
