A FLEET-FOOTED
and well organised Purfleet side outmanoeuvred Maidenhead on Tuesday
night, sending them crashing to their first defeat of the season.
Last year it took the Essex side until November to chalk-up their
first win, but their hoof and hope tactics have been replaced over
the summer with a slick passing game.
There were also a lot of young faces in the side and their youthful
exuberance was soon producing results on the pitch.
The match was only four minutes old when the Magpies' defence was
opened up by a lightning attack.
Breaking from midfield, Steve Marshall slotted a beautifully weighted
pass to Buglione, who found himself one-on-one against Richard Barnard.
The striker had plenty of time, as he looked up before stroking
the ball across the face of goal into the far corner.
There was look of sudden realisation on the Magpies' faces. This
was not going to be another Harrow-style walkover.
A goal to the good after two minutes, the Purfleet players settled
into a fluent playing style.
Solid in defence, the visitors' soon captured the midfield, as every
loose ball found a Purfleet boot.
When United had the ball they were quickly closed down, but when
Purfleet had the ball they simply passed their way out of trouble.
Much to the relief of the fans, the whistle finally blew and a very
one-sided half came to a welcome end.
Whatever happened in the changing rooms at halftime had a dramatic
result on the pitch.
Eight minutes into the second half, a cute one-two between Paul
Scott and Obinna Ulasi by-passed the defence, allowing Ulassi to
unleash a low cross into the box.
Purfleet's Martyn Lawrence stuck his foot out and tucked the ball
inside his near post.
Maidenhead were suddenly firing on all four cylinders, while a rattled
Purfleet abandoned their effective passing game to concentrate on
hoof and hope again.
It took the visitors another 20 minutes to recover their calm, but
it was Maidenhead who finally undid themselves with some suicidal
defending.
In the 30th minute, Purfleet's skillful winger Jon Keeling dragged
the defence out of shape with a jinking diagonal run across the
box.
Reaching the dead-ball line he pulled the ball back across the face
of goal for Paul Linger to head in at the far post.
Anyone who stopped watching to discuss Purfleet's second goal would
have missed their third.
Straight from the kick-off they regained possession and Marshall
set off down the right wing.
He arrived at the dead-ball line unchallenged, whipped in a floated
cross and United's Paul Kelly sealed his side's fate by steering
the ball into the back of the net.
To their credit, Maidenhead refused to give up and continued to
look for an answer.
Ulasi rattled the woodwork with a powerful 25 yard drive, but the
post saved Purfleet and the visitors played out the dying minutes
for a deserved win.
