United strolled to victory over Egham Town on Saturday, despite
fielding another experimental line-up.
Reserve goalkeeper Nick Hart was a virtual spectator in the match,
being called on only once to get involved in the action, while a
total of 19 players were used.
The best chance of the first half came when a cross from South African
Dylan Kendrick fell to the impressive Grant Keywood, who has now
signed a contract with the club, but former Magpies goalkeeper Michael
Bolger blocked his goal-bound shot.
Just before half-time, a neat piece of trickery from Lawrence Yaku
saw the striker create an opening but sent his fierce strike inches
wide of the upright, with Bolger beaten.
United finally took the lead on 59 minutes, when Ryan Ashe fired
in a low shot from the edge of the box and six minutes later
it was 2-0.
Lee Channell, who had just come on as substitute, fired in a shot
that gave neither Bolger nor the hapless defender on the line, any
chance.
Yesterday (Thursday), the Magpies travelled to Uxbridge, but the
result was unknown at the time the Advertiser went to press.
Uniteds progress is clearly going to plan, with Brentford
the only side to have got the better of the Magpies in their numerous
pre-season friendlies.
But manager Alan Devonshire remains cautious about his sides
chances in the league this year.
He said: Were going all right at the moment and the
new players are starting to find their feet.
The new season starts next Saturday and Im, looking
forward to it.
But its going to be very hard.
Tomorrow (Saturday), manager Alan Devonshire is splitting the squad,
with the first team travelling to Hanwell Town, while a second XI
will visit Amersham.
