Currie's tasty footwork

MAIDENHEAD United and Slough Town served up one of the most entertaining friendlies seen at York Road for several seasons on Tuesday night, with the Magpies snatching victory 10 minutes from time.
There were several new faces in the United line-up, including Gareth Paxton, a young central defender, former Colchester United midfielder Craig Farley, ex-Oxford United midfielder Rob Cruz and Martin Currie, a striker, formerly with Harrow Borough, Hayes and QPR.
Currie instantly endeared himself to the York Road faithful with a strong performance, setting up one goal and scoring United's winner, with a brilliant solo effort.
The game got off to a flying start, when Currie slipped a delightful ball through to Lawrence Yaku, who outpaced his marker and slotted the ball under Clive Lyttle.
Slough's first chance fell on five minutes, when Glen Harris fired narrowly over.
The game flowed well throughout the first half, as both sides attempted to play the ball along the floor, with Martyn Lee and Martin Williams leading by example in United’s midfield.
On 40 minutes the Rebels equalised, when Andy Deaner turned on the edge of the area and blasted an unstoppable shot past Phil Wilson.
Slough then went close to snatching a half-time lead, when Matt Miller, their big signing from Yeading, shot narrowly wide.
But it was the Magpies who went into the break ahead, after Yaku atoned for some glaring misses by firing home from the edge of the area.
Neither side made any changes at the break, indicating that both managers were intent on winning.
On 52 minutes, the Rebels equalised, when Brian Connor's back-pass fell short and Matt Miller rushed in to slip the ball under the advancing keeper.
United regained the lead on 80 minutes, however, when a brilliant solo run from Currie ended with him shooting low, inside the near post, giving Lyttle no chance.
Two minutes later the Magpies came close to extending their lead when Farley sent a header just over the bar, but it was Slough who ended the game on the up, with Deaner heading just over the top after finding space at the far post.United’s clash with Uxbridge on Saturday ended in the stalest of 0-0 draws, with neither side producing a single decent chance on goal.
