Debutant
Patterson opens his account (02.11.04)
A
DEBUT goal from new signing Simon Patterson helped the Magpies to
victory in the first round of the Carthium Cup on Tuesday.
The tall striker coolly slotted the ball home on 47 minutes to open
the scoring, following a goalless first half.
Hayes equalised through former United player Peter Dean on 56 minutes.
Deans initial effort drew an acrobatic save from Nick Hart,
but he then pounced on the rebound to level the score.
Hayes were then unlucky not to take the lead, Kieran Knight hitting
the post.
The Maidenhead winner came on 76 minutes, when a Barrie Matthews
cross found the head of Craig OConnor who made no mistake
with the header.
Maidenhead now face Sutton at home in the next round of the Conference
League Cup.
The match on Tuesday saw both sides field squad line-ups.
For the Magpies Ollie Muggleton and Luke Costello made their first
appearances of the season, and Simon Patterson and Michael Perrineau-Daly
made their debuts.
In a unique funding arrangement, the losers take the prize in each
round.
So the Magpies move onto the second round while the losers will
take home £500.
Debutant Simon Patterson made an immediate impression against Hayes,
capping off a fine match with a goal.
Patterson, 22, was on the books at Watford for three years without
making a first team appearance.
He was released by the Hornets in May, but during his time at Vicarage
Road he did gain league experience in a three-month loan spell at
Wycombe Wanderers.
He also spent a month on loan at Slough Town in 2002.
The estimates on Lawrence Yaku's lay-off with a shoulder injury
have been brought down to six weeks.
