Harts
errors prove costly (25.08.04)
DESPITE
a disappointing scoreline, the Magpies produced a heartening display
at fancied Weymouth on Wednesday evening.
But it was mistakes by keeper Nick Hart and some poor shooting at
the other end which saw the Magpies come home without a point.
The rot started in the first few minutes when Hart mis-kicked the
ball directly to Weymouth striker Eribenne who finished well.
From this low point the Magpies produced some fine football although
it took until the 42nd minute to restore parity.
A Barrie Matthews free-kick curled into the danger area and Andy
Dugdale headed home the equaliser.
Ten minutes into the second half saw the Magpies produce a glorious
chance for Matthews, but his effort agonisingly hit the post and
was cleared to safety.
Just three minutes later Philips headed in at the far post to give
the home side the lead once again.
The Magpies problems at the back were compounded up front
where chances were created but not taken.
Saunders went close at one stage and Jamie Cook had an effort cleared
off the line, as the visitors tried to find a way through.
On 83 minutes the Magpies misery became complete when Hart
came for a Barlow cross, but was unable to get a hand on it, and
could only watch as it sailed into the back of the net for the sucker
punch.
In front of a good travelling support United will be upset at the
final scoreline, but take heart from the fact that they generally
matched Weymouth who are expected to be in the promotion shake-up
at the end of the season.
