Points
snatched in last minute (27.08.05)
A
LAST-MINUTE wonder-strike from substitute Charlie Hill gave Hayes
all three points in a turgid encounter at Church Road on Saturday.
The game started in chaos with six players (four from Hayes, two
from Maidenhead) unable to reach the ground in time for kick-off,
following traffic problems on the M4.
The Magpies were first out of the blocks and were unlucky not to
take the lead on three minutes, when a snap-shot from Robert Traynor
was fumbled wide by Hayes keeper Kevin Davies.
Five minutes later Daryl Wilson broke through for United, only for
his lob to bounce on the wrong side of the post.
Hayes then began to get into the game but created very little in
front of goal, the closest chance coming when a defensive header
from Kamran Abassi hit the post and was scrambled to safety by former
Flackwell Heath keeper Paul McCarthy, making his debut in goal for
the Magpies.
After the break, the home team began to take charge.
With United fielding four debutants, legs soon began to tire, and
Hayes took advantage in the 57th minute with a sweeping move down
the right wing.
Jeff Gouldings cross was cleverly dummied by Kieran Knight
to leave Stuart Goodall plenty of time and space to fire home from
close range.
Hayes almost doubled their lead four minutes later with a Knight
header, only for Jason Cousins to clear the ball off the line.
Uniteds cause was then made more difficult when, with 13 minutes
remaining, Traynor received a red card following a clash with Robbie
Williams.
The incident only served to fire up the Magpies, and the equaliser
came with four minutes remaining.
Following a foul on Abassi, Solomon Taiwo swung a free-kick in from
the right wing, which Davies came for but completely missed, allowing
substitute John Bacon to tap in on his debut.
However Hayes were not to be denied a first win and with just seconds
of normal time left, substitute Charlie Hill picked up a loose ball
on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a wicked, swerving
drive which dipped just under the crossbar.
United poured forward in an effort to save the point but this time
a Taiwo free-kick from the left produced a flying save from Davies
to condemn the Magpies to bottom place in the table.
