Floodgates
open after an hour (04.02.06)
LADY Luck deserted the Magpies just when they needed her most on
Saturday.
Having defied league-leaders Weymouth for almost an hour, the home
side took full advantage of the rub of the green to score twice
in five minutes, before cruising to a flattering four-goal victory.
United manager Carl Taylor had set his stall out to frustrate the
Terras from the word go.
Unsurprisingly Weymouth dominated the match, with Scott Tarr being
called into action in the ninth minute with a superb save denying
man of the match Andrew Harris from a free-kick.
Tarr was beaten after a quarter of an hour when a John McGrath corner
was flicked on by Matt Bound to Roy O'Brien, only for his header
to be cleared off the line by Steve Dell.
In the 27th minute Raphael Nade set up McGrath on the left side
of the penalty area, only for Tarr to parry his effort, and
with the interval in sight Tarr made a superb double save from former
Magpie Craig O'Connor.
With 58 minutes gone Weymouth got the break they needed when the
referee overruled his linesmen over a corner decision. McGrath cut
the place-kick back to Harris, whose chip found the free head of
Ben Smith to steer the ball home.
A minute later the tension became too much for the players when,
following a tangle on the ground between O'Connor and Nathan Bunce,
all the players steamed into each other.
Fom the resulting free-kick, Nade poked in a goal from an offside
position.
This left Taylor no option but to commit more men forward, and so
with gaps appearing in the hitherto tight United defence, Weymouth
went to town.
Nade capitalised on a misplaced pass by Joe Bruce to square the
ball to McGrath to slot the ball into the empty net.
With seven minutes left the impressive Lee Elam completed the rout
when he made a tricky run along the byline before lifting the ball
over Tarr into the back of the net.
United's best chance came with the end almost in sight, when a long
shot from Ryan Parsons was well saved by Jason Matthews in the Weymouth
goal.
POACHER: Former Magpie Craig O'Connor was denied by Scott Tarr's
brave double save on Saturday.
