Feathers
fly in clash of Magpies (05.11.05)
A THREE STAR second-half performance gave Maidenhead United
a long awaited and much deserved second league victory of the season
in Dorset on Saturday.
The first half saw a familiar pattern emerge, with Maidenhead playing
some good football but without really coming close to breaching
the Dorchester backline.
With half-time looming things took a turn for the worse, when a
weak defensive header left Matt Groves one-on-one with debutant
Scott Tarr in the United goal.
The referee adjudged that Tarr clipped Groves just inside the box
but mysteriously only showed the keeper a yellow card. Justin Keeler
made no mistake with the penalty to send United into the break a
goal down.
With a half-time tongue-lashing from manager Carl Taylor ringing
in their ears, the Magpies pressed hard for an equaliser from the
off.
It came on 54 minutes, when a Ryan Ashe cross from the left wing
found Stephen Hughes, who neatly turned and fired home from a tight
angle.
United took the lead on 68 minutes, when a Matt Glynn pass to Lee
Newman on the left saw the diminutive striker cut inside and drill
a shot from the edge of the penalty inside Dorchester goalkeeper
Craig Bradshaws near post.
A rampant Untied then finished the job with seven minutes remaining
with another move down the left.
This time the source was Brendan Gallen who, in the face of a flying
tackle, bravely slotted the ball through to Newman.
From a similar position to his first goal, Newman shot across the
goal where a flailing Bradshaw only helped the ball into the back
of the net.
