Greene
era finishes in desperation (10.09.05)
A
DESPERATE performance against a hard-working but mediocre Yeading
outfit sentenced Maidenhead United to their fifth defeat in seven
games on Saturday.
The visitors made their intentions clear as early as the third minute,
when Marvin Morgan burst through the defence and unleashed a shot
which brought out the best in goalkeeper Paul McCarthy.
United hit back in the sixth minute when a Solomon Taiwo corner
found the head of Olawale Ojelabi, whose effort was deflected wide.
The topsy-turvy nature of the contest was then confirmed, as Yeading
launched a counter-attack, Errol Telemaque going close with a shot.
Yeading took the lead on 22 minutes, when a cross from the right
was flicked on to the far post, where Michael Johnson was on hand
to collect the ball, slip his marker and score from close range.
United equalised in sight of half-time, when Lee Newman was sent
sprawling in the penalty area and Stephen Hughes converted confidently
from the spot.
In the second half the two sides again traded chances, Alfie Kamara
having a shot scrambled wide on 48 minutes, before Steve Wales forced
another good save from McCarthy two minutes later.
Yeading re-took the lead on 58 minutes, when Telemaque found room
in the penalty area to loop a shot over the helpless McCarthy into
the back of the net.
Dennis Greene then replaced a defender with an attacker and once
again substitute John Bacon caused problems in the opposition defence.
On 83 minutes a Ryan Parsons cross was met by the towering crown
of Bacon, whose bullet header beat the keeper only to hit the underside
of the crossbar and bounce away to safety.
In injury-time the keeper was again beaten, this time by a Taiwo
shot, only for the ball to clip the top of the crossbar.
