A late Dwane Lee strike secured the
Magpies fourth consecutive 1-1 draw on a Saturday in an entertaining
open game in Warwickshire. On a bright autumnal day both sides
put the good playing surface to use by giving spectators an
attractive footballing display. The first half saw Maidenhead
take the upper hand in terms of possession but it was Rugby who
posed a greater threat on the counter attack as early as the third
minute when Andy Rigby had a good effort which went narrowly wide.
Lee Newman had United's best chance of the half in the twelfth
minute when his shot drew a flying one handed save from Farhad
Afandiyev in the Rugby goal. As the half drew to a close David
Stone served notice of his intent to strike with an effort that was
tipped wide by Maidenhead keeper Chico Ramos just after the half
hour mark. Minutes later Stone went one better when he latched
onto a penetrating cross field pass to sprint past the last Magpie
defender and this time make no mistake with his finish to put the
home team ahead.
After the break Rugby emerged with
renewed purpose and beat Ramos again in the 50th minute only for
Ashley Smith to clear off the line. With captain Dominic
Sterling leading by example, Maidenhead weathered the storm and as
the half went on played their way back into the game. The
equaliser arrived with just nine minutes remaining when a United
corner found its way to Sam Hatton in the midfield, the on loan
youngster launched the ball back into the danger area where it was
picked up by Lee who, with the Rugby defence left flat footed,
quickly dispatched the ball into the back of the net.
