Newman strike earns win (03.03.07)

TIVERTON TOWN 0

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (0)

A second half goal from Lee Newman led to a hard earned victory for Maidenhead down in Devon on Saturday.  With Tiverton experiencing similar problems to United with their pitch, the sunny weather enabled the game to go ahead but only on an extremely heavy pitch which did not allow the ball to bounce or run naturally.
From the kick off Tiverton went for goal looking to make use of the fact that the sun was shining directly into Magpie goalkeeper Chico Ramos’ eyes.  This led to an early mix up between Ramos and his defence but Town could not take advantage of the opportunity.  Despite the conditions both teams attempted to play football and this paid dividends for Maidenhead in the 11th minute when a good move down the right between Neville Roach (pictured above) and Lee Newman set up Errol Telemaque with a great chance to score from close range but he blasted his shot over the bar.  For all their pressure Tiverton were unable to create clear cut chances and it was Telemaque again in the 35th minute who nearly broke the deadlock in the first half, his shot this time hitting the target but being well saved by Sam Hutchings in the Tivvy goal.  Half time saw the referee replaced due to an injury.
After the break it was Maidenhead’s turn to take advantage of the sun and this led to the only goal of the game in the 57th minute.  An Ashley Smith corner swung in high from the right clearing the defence and finding Roach with the goal at his mercy, his shot was blocked on the line but Newman was on hand to finish the job to put the Magpies ahead.  The remainder of the game saw both sides go all out to alter the scoreline, Tiverton putting the Maidenhead goal under regular pressure and United breaking quickly to create goalscoring opportunities.  With a no holds barred approach from both teams a nasty but accidental clash between a player from each team in the Tiverton penalty area meant injury time was always going to be lengthy.  This was exacerbated when David Clarke was sent off in the 88th minute for dissent.  In the seven minutes of stoppage time that followed, both teams had good chances to score, Ramos making a fine save from a Chris Bale long shot, and sub Yashwa Romeo going clear only for his weak shot to be easily saved.  As the clock neared five, Tiverton thought they had snatched a point when the ball was forced over the line from a corner but the assistant’s flag had been raised as the ball came over so the goal was disallowed to give Maidenhead a hard fought and well deserved victory.
