Two goals from Lee
Newman overturned a one goal deficit against Horsham to give United
their seventh consecutive win and send them into the third and final
qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy. Horsham proved to be
tough opponents and it took a goal from the visitors midway through
the second half to spark United into life which they did to
devastating effect scoring twice within minutes to retake the lead
and going close to adding to the score more than once before the
final whistle.
Magpies manager
Johnson Hippolyte made three changes to the line up that had
triumphed in the FA Cup the previous week, news signings Delroy
Preddie and Dwane Lee along with Craig Lewington slotting into give
a break to Richard Witt and Chico Ramos ahead of the big FA Cup tie
next week, whilst Dominic Sterling was unavailable due to a personal
commitment.
These changes to the
line up gave Horsham the upper hand in the opening exchanges with
Lewis Taylor going closest to scoring in a dour first half with a
long shot which was pushed round the post by Preddie.
The introduction of
Stephen Hughes for Maidenhead on the left wing at half time gave the
game fresh impetus and just short of the hour mark the big striker
whipped in a tantalising cross which eluded attackers and defenders
alike. It was Horsham though that took the lead in the 66th
minute when a penetrating throw from Stuart Myall on the right hand
touch line was flicked on by Carl Rook causing chaos in the United
defence which Jamie Taylor took advantage of to slip through the
backline and volley home from close range.
Maidenhead reacted
to this insult by pouring forward in search of an equaliser
bolstered by the addition of Adie Allen on the right wing. The goal
came within two minutes of the restart when a pinpoint cross field
pass from Ryan Parsons enabled Newman to sprint clear of the defence
and finish with aplomb to give goalkeeper Alan Mansfield no chance.
With a quarter of an hour left Newman put United ahead although this
time it was all down to Mansfield as he fired a Jose Goncalves back
pass straight at the retreating striker and could only watch in
horror as the ball rebounded back past him and into the net.
From this point on
it was all Maidenhead with Allen and Yashwa Romeo both going close
to adding to the score before the final whistle signalled United’s
seventh consecutive victory setting the club up perfectly for the FA
Cup trip to Stafford. |
