Magpies on cloud nine (07.04.07)

NORTHWOOD 0

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 2 (1)

Maidenhead extended their winning run to nine with a comfortable victory in the Easter sunshine at struggling Northwood.  Backed by a sizeable contingent of supporters who had made the short trip from Maidenhead, the Magpies set up camp in their opponents half from the first whistle and swiftly set about combating a minefield of a pitch whilst trying to find a way through a determined Northwood defence.

Northwood keeper Bill Fishenden was first called into serious action in the sixth minute when Errol Telemaque knocked the ball onto Lee Newman whose shot was well saved.  Newman was then instrumental in the opening goal just after the half hour.  The blonde striker slotted a neat pass on the left wing to Ashley Smith who skipped into the penalty area and let fly with a right footed shot which crept in at the far post.  Despite this blow Northwood continued to try and play themselves back into the game and almost created a chance when Harry Hunt found himself in the clear on the stroke of half time, only for a well timed tackle from Ryan Parsons to clear the danger.

Northwood took heart from this upbeat finish to the first period and continued in a similar vein after the break, rangy midfielder Jerome Hall impressing with his tricky runs, and a confident penalty shout doing enough to suggest that the game was far from over.  However as the half reached the midway point, Maidenhead again asserted their dominance, Newman and Telemaque again combining well on left to this time allow the former Slough striker to shoot, his effort being touched onto the far post by Fishenden.  The introduction of Yashwa Romeo reinvigorated the United attack and in the 77th minute his cross from the left found Telemaque whose shot was helped into the back of the net by Woods Duane Williams.  Three minutes later Telemaque and Roach combined well to put Romeo through but his shot was comfortably saved by Fishenden.  In the dying minutes United keeper Chico Ramos got a chance to show off his skills with a flying save from Danny Julienne.
