Two goals in the first half were enough to give
Milton Keynes Dons their first Senior Cup against the Magpies at
Wycombe on Bank Holiday Monday. The
match, coming two days after United's unbelievable promotion, saw
manager Johnson Hippolyte make a few changes to the personnel and
shape of the team, Delroy Preddie, Ryan Parsons, Steve McNamara
Yashwa Romeo and Dean Fenton all returning to the starting line up
in a return to a 4-4-2 formation, Ashley Smith switching to right
back and Mark Nisbet moving into midfield.
The Dons dominated the opening period and
unsurprisingly took the lead in the 16th minute when Dominic
Sterling was adjudged to have committed a foul in the penalty area,
Sean Baldock making not mistake with the spot kick. It was
almost two nil in the 34th minute but Preddie's save was just enough
to push Jon Hastings shot clear. Hastings was not to be denied
however and he got the ball in the net three minutes later with a
header to double the lead. Stung by going two goals behind,
Maidenhead fought their way back into the game, Stephen Hughes going
close with a header just before half time.
Hippolyte rang the changes at the break,
bringing on Bobby Behzadi and Dereck Brown in a switch to the 3-5-2
formation, and once Preddie had denied Hastings from close range 10
minutes after the interval, United created enough chances to win the
cup. The introduction of Lee Newman on the hour mark proved
crucial in pepping up the attack and in the 67th minute the first
goal arrived. Newman took the ball in from the left and passed
to Dwane Lee on the right, his ball into the box was met by Romeo
whose shot was spilled into the back of the net by Dons' keeper
Adolpho Baines. This prompted a Maidenhead onslaught with
Romeo, Newman and Sterling all going close to levelling the score
but despite four minutes of stoppage time the Dons held onto win. |
