Maidenhead's nine match winning run came to an
abrupt halt on Easter Monday against Team Bath. The Bath
University team earned revenge for a similar result favouring the
Magpies down in Somerset earlier in the season, with a disciplined
performance which saw the students snatch victory at the death. For much of the game United were very much in control taking the game to the Students, in second place at start of play. Backed by the biggest league home crowd this season Maidenhead set up camp in their opponents half but found it difficult to breach a well organised defence. The Magpies' two best chances came from free kicks in the first period. In the 24th minute Grant Cooper launched the ball from the midfield and found Yashwa Romeo in space, the striker in for injured Lee Newman, had time to turn and shoot but his effort went just wide. In first half stoppage time and Errol Telemaque free kick in the right corner was cut back to Cooper on the edge of the penalty area. The defender's low shot drawing an excellent one handed save from Darren Chitty in the Students goal. The second half saw United again press hard for an opening but once the game reached the hour mark Team Bath presented an ever increasing threat on the counter attack as the effect of two games in three games began to show. With nine minutes left Sean Canham fired a warning across the Maidenhead bows when he blasted over from close range. This went unheeded three minutes later when following a superb save from Chico Ramos, Team Bath captain Neil Saunders was first to the loose ball and fired home at the far post. Victory was sealed in the second minute of stoppage time when Team Bath broke quickly down the left which facilitated a simple pass to the unmarked Sean Canham at the far post who showed no mercy with a clinical finish to beat Ramos. |
