A
second half Craig O'Connor header made it three successive league
comebacks to draw 1-1. This time the opponents were Merthyr Tydfil
in a predictably tight encounter.
The Welshmen began the game in bullish fashion and were soon in
front when Craig Steins capitalised on hesitant Maidenhead defending
from a corner which saw the ball make its way to the far post where
Steins was on hand to turn it into the net inside six minutes.
Maidenhead responded by taking the game to their opponents but like
the previous two clashes between the clubs this season, chances were
hard to come by and it was not until the stroke of half time that
United came close to equalising, a Dwane Lee free kick being
deflected wide.
After the break the Magpies tore into their opponents with renewed
purpose and Merthyr goalkeeper Ashley Morris needed two attempts to
grasp a good shot from O'Connor in the 51st minute gathering the
ball at the second attempt with Sam Hatton closing in.
With Maidenhead pressing hard for a goal, Merthyr constantly
threatened to break away and score another, a long ball in the 53rd
minutes seeing Steins go clear only to shoot wide. Nine
minutes later the Martyrs went even closer when Garry Shephard
forced a good save from Delroy Preddie but with the keeper unable to
hold onto the ball, Shephard found himself with an open net but was
too with his second attempt allowing Ryan Parsons to get back and
clear the ball off the line.
With seventeen minutes left Maidenhead won a corner on the right
which was swung over by Steve McNamara perfectly onto the head of
O'Connor who rose highest at the near post to nod the ball over the
line. This goal appeared to leave Maidenhead in the
ascendancy, and set up to force a win, but the introduction of Craig
Moses for Merthyr saw them go closest to winning the game.
Coming on with nine minutes left Moses immediately forced Preddie
into a good save which he could not hold, only for the sub to hit
the post with his follow up. Preddie then made an acrobatic
save from Steins and pushed another effort from Moses over the bar
to leave the Magpies happy with a point.
