Corby press to trouser points again (17.01.07)

CORBY TOWN 1 (1)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 0

Maidenhead lost for the second time in five days to bottom club Corby Town last night.  On a disastrous evening for the Magpies, the team coach did not arrive at the ground until 7.20 pm, and with Corby refusing to push back the kick off, Johnson Hippolyte’s men faced a hasty rush to ready themselves for themselves for the 7.45 start.  Both teams were feeling the strain of a heavy fixture list, Hippolyte being forced to field players lacking match fitness and Corby missing four men through suspension.

A small crowd of 132 saw the two teams gamely battle against the weather conditions, with unsurprisingly little in terms of goalmouth incident.  What proved to ultimately be the winner for Corby came midway through the first half when a mix up between United keeper Delroy Preddie and defender Ryan Johnson let Brett Darby into score for the Steelmen in the 28th minute.  Maidenhead’s best chance to equalize came with nine minutes remaining when a Yashwa Romeo was header was goal bound, only to be diverted over the bar by team mate Lee Newman which just about summed up another bad day at the office for Maidenhead who now hover perilously above the relegation zone.

Team: Preddie, Johnson, Parsons, Lee, Bunce, Sterling, Fenton (60 Romeo), Brown, Telemaque (77 Hughes), Roach (70 Newman), Smith. Subs: Ramos, Nisbet.

Magpie of the Match: Nathan Bunce.  Gate: 132.
