Magpies get their Chips (17.02.07)

CHIPPENHAM TOWN 2 (0)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (1)

Maidenhead had a half time lead overturned on Saturday in a tempestuous affair against Chippenham. Despite kicking up the huge slope the home team had much the better of the first period, star striker Dave Gilroy twice going clear in the first twenty minutes only for Chico Ramos to deny him a goal with two good saves. Ramos had to be at his best again in the 24th minute to save a Kevin Halliday header from a corner kick on the right. Within a minute though United had taken the lead, a long clearance down field finding Neville Roach who cleverly spotted goalkeeper Chris Snoddy off his line and lobbed the hapless stopper from outside the penalty area. The rest of the drama in the first half was confined to the officials, one of the linesmen having to return to the dressing room when his flag fell apart midway through the first period, and then deep in stoppage time, referee John Farries pulled up injured and following the time honoured call to the crowd for a replacement the half ended close to 4 pm.
With the slope now in their favour Chippenham looked eager to get back into the game but owed their comeback to a large slice of good fortune when the replacement referee controversially awarded them a corner five minutes into the half. From the resulting kick Paul Milsom rose highest to head home the equaliser. This left the Bluebirds with the scent of victory in their nostrils and within minutes Ramos was called into action to tip a header from Sam Allison over the bar. Maidenhead defended stoutly though with Ryan Johnson particularly impressive on his return to the team, but with 16 minutes left a slip let Sean Seavill through and he comfortably beat Ramos from close range. United’s hopes took another knock in the 77th minute when tempers boiled over and Dwane Lee was dismissed for violent conduct following an unseemly melee involving most of the players from either side. The ten remaining Magpies pushed hard to get back into the game but could not break down the home defence in the remaining time left.
