Daniels Perish In Magpies' Den (17.03.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 3 (1)

STAMFORD 0

A virtuoso Lee Newman goal was the highlight of perhaps Maidenhead United’s best league performance of the season at York Road against Stamford on Saturday.  Watched by a season’s best league crowd, the Magpies disdainfully dealt a blow to their opponents play off ambitions in a comfortable three goal win.
Prior to kick off United manager Johnson Hippolyte scored an important psychological blow over his opposite number Graham Drury, with Drury electing to field a conservative 4-5-1 formation which allowed the Magpies to dictate the passage of the game from the off.  With the wind, sun and slope against them Stamford defended deep and in numbers in the first half, seemingly set on getting to half time with a clean sheet if nothing else.  Maidenhead took the opportunity to tear into their opponents with the likes of Ashley Smith and Yashwa Romeo working the defence hard, chasing every ball down. However with half time in sight there was little in the way of goal mouth action and Stamford looked to be on course to survive to the break.  This all changed in the 39th minute when a Smith corner from the right was swung into box where it was met by Darti Brown who knocked the ball back to Dominic Sterling who struck a sweet shot into the net to send the Magpies to the interval with a deserved the lead.
After the break United continued to dominate, a Scott Taylor chip which Chico Ramos tipped over the bar, the closest the vistors came to scoring.  The second killer goal came with 18 minutes remaining when Lee Newman picked the ball up in left midfield.  The striker then put his head down and with the ball appearing to be controlled by an invisible piece of string attached to his boot ran at the defence.  Like a knife through butter Newman continued into the penalty area without opposition and once clear applied an exquisite finish to beat the keeper from close range.  Victory was sealed in the 83rd minute when a cross field ball found Neville Roach in the clear and he promptly caught the keeper napping firing a long shot home inside the near post from distance.
