Magpies squash Mangos (21.04.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 3 (2)

MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 0

The Magpies took a big step towards a play off place with a comfortable three goal win over Mangotsfield United on Saturday.  Cheered on by a season's best league crowd of 492 in the bright Spring sunshine, Maidenhead never looked like losing the game and once they had broken the deadlock the result was a formality.

Maidenhead dominated the game throughout but took a while to test opposition goalkeeper Steve Book, Stephen Hughes skewing a good chance wide in the 23rd minute and star man Dwane Lee having a header deflected past the post in the 32nd minute.  The goal finally came in the 38th minute when an Ashley Smith corner from the left was helped onto the far post by Lee Newman and Hughes, where captain Dominic Sterling was on hand to put the ball in the net.  On the stroke of half time the lead was doubled, once again Smith claimed the assist, this time by crossing a free kick from the right wing which was met by Nisbet whose miskick left a flatfooted Book having to agonisingly watch the ball trickle over the line.

Victory was sealed early in the second half when a good run down the left flank from Newman saw him take the ball to the byline where he cut it back to Bobby Behzadi.  Behzadi powered through the midfield and picked his spot drilling the ball past Book into the left hand corner.

With nothing to play for Mangotsfield elected to leave their mark on the game in rather a physical fashion a number of nasty challenges culminating in Ellis Wilmott catching Delroy Preddie with his boot which led to his dismissal.  Preddie got up but was clearly disorientated and despite protestations that he was OK to carry on, he was eventually substituted and rushed to hospital.  In the meantime Mangotsfield won a penalty for handball and with his first touch of the game replacement goalkeeper Chico Ramos dived to his left and saved the spot kick.  In the remaining quarter of an hour Maidenhead had several good chances to add to their total but the score remained the same.
