Magpies make it two for joy on Boxing Day (26.12.06)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 3 (1)
CHESHUNT 0

Maidenhead recorded their biggest league win of the season, and just their second at home, in relative comfort in front of a meagre Boxing Day crowd.  The opening minutes were scrappy, but in the 8th minute Maidenhead took the lead out of nothing when Darti Brown collected the ball on the right wing, cut inside and curled a delightful 20 yard left foot shot around Kalli.  The next twenty minutes were instantly forgettable, but Cheshunt looked dangerous at Maidenhead’s inability to defend high free-kicks into the box and from one of these Barnard headed narrowly wide.  Around the half-hour, the Magpies had a purple patch and created and spurned four golden opportunities in a ten minute period.  On 27 minutes, good work from Lee Newman resulted in a delightful left wing cross, but with time and space David Clarke blasted wide.  Two minutes later, a beautiful through ball found Errol Telemaque clear of the last defender, but his shot was deflected wide, and a minute later an inch perfect cross from Steve McNamara was headed wide by the unmarked Telemaque.  The busy ex-Yeading forward missed another great opportunity when following a superb four man passing move he headed over from a glorious cross from Ryan Parsons.  Before the interval, Cheshunt created one moment of panic when a cross from the wing caused indecision before being cleared.

The second half began with McNamara spurning a chance, shooting high and wide when well placed.  On the hour, Lee Newman hit the post from a very tight angle, as Maidenhead began to become frustrated at their inability to extend their lead.  The warnings lights were flashing six minutes later when the lively Clark beat Preddie to a long through ball but was forced too wide and his cross found no-one in support.  One minute later and Fenton sent in a fizzing 25 yard shot that had Preddie scrambling across his goal, but the ball just went wide of the post.

The Magpies finally extended their lead on 79 minutes. Following a challenge by Telemaque, the ball broke to Newman and he stroked the ball into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.  Maidenhead were now well on top and substitute Steven Hughes audacious chip from the edge of the box drifted narrowly wide, but on 85 minutes, he combined well with Newman to score the final goal.  His deft touch sent Newman clear and his cross found Hughes who, despite being grounded following a tackle, retained the ball and although lying on his back was able to shoot across goal and saw the ball creep in at the far post.
