A Dwane Lee penalty in extra time put
Maidenhead through to their first Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Final for
four years. The impressive surroundings of Adams Park witnessed a
suitably high tempo good footballing display from both teams
although there was a lack of goalmouth action. Wanderers fielding a
very young side started brightly, the speed of SamTucknott on the
right wing providing an early threat, but it wasn’t until the 43rd
minute that Chico Ramos’ goal looked in danger. An uncharacteristic
slip up from Dominic Sterling allowed Pietro Giambrone through on
goal. His shot beat Ramos but cannoned off the cross bar. Two
minutes later and it was Ramos’ countryman Ricardo Batista who was
called into action at the other end when a cross from Ryan Parsons
was met with a good effort from Dean Fenton which was pushed wide by
Batista at full stretch.
The second half saw Maidenhead gradually take control as the home
team faded, but United could not manufacture an end product to
finish the tie off and so extra time was called for. Just two
minutes into the extra period, good work from Steve McNamara on the
left saw the ball reach Lee Newman in the box where he was brought
down by a defender. The referee pointed to the spot and Dwane Lee
stepped up to take the kick waiting for Batista to commit himself
before burying the ball in the back of the net. Wanderers, the cup
holders, fought hard to get back into the game but there seemed
little chance of any further goals leaving United comfortable
winners.
The win means Maidenhead go through to the final at the end of the
season against either Chesham United or Milton Keynes Dons, in a tie
to be played at Adams Park on May Day Bank Holiday Monday. |
