Magpies in Seventh Heaven (27.03.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 3 (0)

WEALDSTONE 0

Three second half goals made it seven wins in a row for the Magpies against tough opposition in Wealdstone who gave a much better performance than the scoreline suggests.  Undaunted by the gulf in league positions the Stones attacked United from the off, playing a high tempo game, launching the ball forward at every opportunity and committing themselves to every tackle.  This frenetic approach ruffled the Magpies but goal scoring opportunities were few and far between at either end until the closing stages of the half.  Then with three minutes to the break a Lee Newman shot from close range was punched away by Stones keeper Paul Smith.  A minute later Smith pulled off a super save to deny Darti Brown who had made a penetrating run from midfield, and let fly with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.  These chances gave United fans the hope of better things to come in the second half but once again it was Wealdstone who were first out of the blocks and this time put sustained pressure on the Maidenhead defence.  This was breached a couple of times early on, Dean Papali rising highest from a corner in the 48th minute to head goalwards only for his effort to be pushed wide by United keeper Chico Ramos.  Five minutes later Ramos produced the save of the match from a Scott Donnelly free kick, diving a full stretch Ramos just managed to get a hand to the ball to direct to safety.  Having weathered the storm it was then Maidenhead's turn to go for goal but unlike their opponents they grasped their opportunities with both hands scoring twice within three minutes to effectively bank the three points. The first goal came in the 63rd minute when Neville Roach showed a poacher's instinct to pounce on a loose ball and clinically finish from close range.  This was followed in the 66th minute by an own goal when the unfortunate Stones captain Chris O'Leary diverted a Grant Cooper free kick into the back of his own net.  Wealdstone had no response to this double blow and it was left to substitute Yashwa Romeo to seal the victory in injury time by chasing down a defensive clearance, running clear of the defence to beat the keeper.
