Maidenhead gleefully accepted two gift goals
from HAYU keeper Kevin Davies to take an unassailable 3-0 half time
lead allowing them to go on and take ample revenge for the Boxing
Day defeat in the reverse fixture at York Road.
Maidenhead took the lead in the ninth minute when a Manny Williams
effort ballooned to the far post where Ashley Smith was free to
score from close range. HAYU then gave Maidenhead the kitchen sink
treatment mounting a sustained effort to get back in the game which
was wasted only for the lack of potency up front, Kieran Knight
guilty of the biggest miss when he failed to even get his header on
target from point blank range in the 28th minute.
Smith was then involved in two key incidents which summed up the
afternoon. With 34 minutes gone the diminutive full back was
handily placed to block an effort from Simon Martin on the line. In
the resulting counter attack, Smith collected the ball again in his
customary position on the right flank and launched a long ball
goalward with Williams in hot pursuit. First to the ball though was
Davies, in for the injured Delroy Preddie, but he somehow managed to
direct his kicked clearance behind him to allow Williams to collect
it with the inviting prospect of an empty net in front of him,
happily filling it with the ball to double the Magpies' lead.
Davies then turned his performance into a veritable comedy of errors
deep into stoppage time when he again failed to clear the ball when
rushing out of his area. This time he collided with Williams, the
loose ball falling to John Hastings. Hastings exchanged passes with
Williams before guiding the ball home to give Maidenhead a 3-0 half
time lead.
Just in case HAYU had any ideas of a comeback Maidenhead scored
again within a minute of the restart. This time the goal had the
mark of quality, a Wes Daly cross from the right hand touchline
being met at the far post by Dwane Lee who guided a delightful
header back across the goal, leaving the hapless Davies grasping
fresh air as the ball sailed into the top right hand corner.
With little to play for HAYU worked hard to get back into the game,
although this left a defence already missing the suspended Nevin
Saroya even more exposed and Maidenhead had ample chances to add to
their score. Things were evened up a little with twelve minutes
remaining when young left midfielder James Hamsher was dismissed for
a reckless challenge, and in the final minute HAYU made the one man
advantage tell when Martin scored a consolation goal. |
