Horsham Humble Impotent Magpies (10.11.07)

HORSHAM 4 (1)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (0)

Despite dominating the game in terms of possession, the Magpies crashed out of the  FA Cup to a Horsham side that seized the day, taking their goal scoring opportunities to go into the second round for the first time in their history.
Those in the near capacity crowd expecting an up tempo blood and thunder cup tie were to be  sorely disappointed as a minefield of a pitch led to both sides taking a safety first approach, always going for two touches to avoid being mugged by the surface.
Maidenhead controlled much of the first half, the hosts seemingly happy to concede ground in order to pose a threat through swift counter attacks.
Both sides had one good chance to score in the first forty five minutes. For United, Yashwa Romeo got on the end of a long kick forward from Louis Wells to go clear in the penalty area, but couldn't get a clear shot at goal, Alan Mansfield in the Horsham goal having just enough time to push the ball round the post in the eleventh minute.
Three minutes later Ashley Smith was handily placed for Maidenhead to clear off the line following a goalmouth scramble.
The opening goal came in stoppage time at the end of the first half, a loose clearance was picked up by Nigel Brake who unleashed an exocet of a shot (pictured above) from fully yards to score, a goal that would go onto be enjoyed by millions on the BBC over the rest of the weekend.
After the break Maidenhead continued to push forward but industrious defending from Horsham meant that Mansfield was not called to make a serious save.
Horsham counter attacks were now becoming more frequent and they doubled their lead just after the hour mark thanks to an acrobatic finish from Lee Carney.
United were then handed a lifeline when Manny Williams was fouled in the penalty area, Dwane Lee converting the penalty.
Three substitutions were then made by  Maidenhead but they could still make no headway and as the game drew to a close Horsham scored twice more from Lee Carney and Lee Farrell, hardly noticing the dismissal of Gary Charman.
