Sunday Morning Defending Costs United (11.08.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 2 (1)

FISHER ATHLETIC 3 (1)

York Road was left stunned on the opening day of the season by a last minute winner for visitors Fisher, the Maidenhead performance characterised by what manager Johnson Hippolyte after the game described as "Sunday morning defending".
On a beautiful sunny day Fisher got off to a perfect start courtesy of a defensive mix up in the third minute.  Attacking down the right, the Fish sparked confusion in the United defence the ball finding its way to an unmarked Gavin Tomlin at the far post who completed the elementary task of rounding goalkeeper Chico Ramos and putting the ball into the empty net.
This boost naturally gave the visitors the upper hand but Maidenhead played their way back into the game and dominated the half.  Manny Williams proved to be a real live wire on his debut up front and almost equalised in the seventh minute with a header that went just over the bar following good work from Errol Telemaque and Carl Wilson-Denis.
Twenty minutes later Williams hit the back of the net with a superb individual goal.  Picking the ball up inside his own half Williams took the ball cross field to the right wing and in the style of Ricky Villa's unforgettable FA Cup winning goal, danced through the Fisher defence before scoring with a cute finish. United then almost took the lead when a Mark Nisbet cross from the right flew across the face of the goal to Ashley Smith at the far post, his header going just wide.
Maidenhead spent most of the second half camped in their oponent's half but always looked vulnerable to a counter attack.  This provided the source of Fisher's second goal just after the hour mark when substitute Andre McCollin sprinted down the left wing and beat Ramos with his shot.  Nisbet was on hand to clear the ball off the line but Jeff Goulding followed up to tap in the loose ball from inches. United were back on level terms four minutes later when a Wilson-Denis effort from the right was too hot to handle for Overland, Bobby Behzadi getting to the ball first to score.
With the heat beginning to take its toll the game  looked to be heading towards a draw as the final whistle drew closer but with a minute left Tomlin finished the game as he started it, slipping through the Maidenhead defence to win the game for Fisher.
